SOUND
Basically sound is something which we can hear. But, technically sound is vibration in a medium such as air, which moves through the medium and affects our ear. When this vibration strike our ear, our brain gives us the sensation of hearing the sound.

This vibration in the medium may be generated by our speech or by playing some musical instrument or by striking onto something etc.
As the sound is a vibration, it requires some medium to vibrate and travel further. The sound travels in a medium like the waves travel on the water surface. In a completely vacuum place sound will not be able to travel from one place to another. Any medium such as air, water, metal etc, can be used as a medium by the sound waves to travel further.

In air, sound travels at a speed of around 344 meters/sec or 1129 feets/sec. In a solid medium such as metals, the sound waves moves at even faster speed. For example, in aluminum it travels at around 5150meters/sec. or 16,896 feets/sec., in gypsum board, it travels at around 20 times faster than the speed at which sound travels through the air.
